My son Keaton was diagnosed with IBD at age 10. Last November he got so very sick and his meds weren’t working anymore. We had been through every med he could try. Finally we came to the realization that his colon was too sick to stay in his body. It was removed along with a piece of his ileum and his rectum. He is 16 years old now, and it has been a year without a colon. He is growing and thriving and finally feeling well again. He is going through puberty and feeling like a teenager. He is overcoming many anxieties that come along with being ill for such a long time. He is the bravest person I know! He has two more surgeries to go, and I know he will face them with strength. We often feel alone and don’t know where to turn. We often have questions and concerns and wonder if we are doing the right things… a network of collaborative healthcare would be a gift!
